An A-Z Guide: Banter like a Brit

  • Arse over elbow - Have you heard the phrase “head over heels”? Well, it’s the same thing, but a crass version.  It’s what usually goes down after 11pm on a Friday night or after one too many Vodka Tonics!
  • Bees Knees - if you are the bees knees, you are FABULOUS! There’s no other way to say it; and might we say, Kate was the Bees Knees.
  • Cock up - Hey, get your head out of the gutter… It’s not what you think. It simply means you made a mistake. Oopsies!
  • Do - Plain and simple, a party! Used in a sentence, you could say “I’m going to a Royal do tonight”.
  • Easy Peasy - We’re guessing you can figure this one out. Hint: easy.
  • Fruity - If you’re feeling fruity, then you’re feeling frisky… Fresh and Fruity takes on a whole new meaning!
  • Get stuffed! - Aka “get lost”.
  • Her Majesty’s pleasure - Although this sounds like a magical place, you do not want to end up at Her Majesty’s pleasure, because if you do, you’re in jail-with no release date! Who would be your 1 phone call?
  • I’m easy - I don’t care.  It’s all the same to me. All these phrases can be used interchangeably.
  • Jammy - If you win big in Vegas, you are a very jammy- lucky- person! One could say Prince William is jammy for finding the love of his life, Kate.
  • Knees up - Get ready to boogy, because if you’re having a knees up, you’re having a dance or party.  Refer to “do”.
  • Love bite - They say “love bite” we say “hickies”. We like their version better
  • Mush - Slang for mouth.  If you wan’t someone to shut their trap, next time try “Shush your mush” instead!
  • Not my cup of tea - If you’re not a fan of Kate’s dress then its “not your cup of tea”… but then, we’d think you’re off your trolley. (see below)
  • Off your trolley - We hope nobody’s ever told you that you’re off your trolley, because if so, you just got dissed! They called you crazy. They said it, not us (well, maybe we did).
  • Piss up - We’re thinking William and his groomsmen had a piss up, or drinking session, for his bachelor party. It’d only be natural after-all..
  • Quid - We thought we’d throw in a word you might need to know if you’re discussing how much money this Royal Wedding is costing! And wow, that would be a LOT of quid. Anyone want to get a guess at how much?
  • Rubbish - This word can mean two things; rubbish can be trash or it can be used to describe something as foolish. Take your pick!
  • Scrummy - Our personal favorite, scrummy is used to describe food that is delicious and sweet! A.scrummy has a nice ring!
  • Taking the biscuit - If something takes the biscuit, it takes the cake! It is the cream of the crop! It out did everything else! It’s the bees knees!
  • Uni - Can you guess? It’s short for university, which in British, is the equivalent of elementary school, not college. Betcha didn’t know that!
  • Vac - Short for vacation or holiday.  Who doesn’t love to take a vac every once in a while?
  • Whinge - Can I get some cheese with that whinge? You guessed it… whine! Nobody likes a whiner, or a whinger!
  • Xoxo - No difference here; this will mean hugs and kisses no matter where in the world you are!
  • Yonks - “Blimey, I haven’t heard from you for yonks”. Well, you don’t need to take this British slang that far, but if you heard someone say that, it would me they hadn’t seen you in ages.
  • Zonked - This is what we are after staying up til wee hours of the morning watching the Royal wedding…exhausted!
