Yesterday we spent the day celebrating National Licorice Day. We gave some away for free (woopeee!) and we took some inspiration from the classic candy. The day really got us to thinking…
1) People L-O-V-E random holidays. Give ‘em a reason to celebrate something and they will. Not that Licorice isn’t a reason to celebrate. We certainly think its reason enough. But, we also think we are going to make celebrating all sorts (mmm. I love all sorts!) of holidays the norm around here.
2) Licorice has been around for ages - and guess what? It’s some pretty influential & powerful stuff. In fact, manuscripts from 360 A.D. record that licorice helped cure eye ailments, skin disease, respiratory infections, and loss of hair (hello, fellas are you listening?). Napoleon Bonaparte even used to eat it during batting to settle his aching stomach. But, he took it a little too far and ate so much of it, that his teeth turn black. Yowzers! That is a lot of licorice. But, don’t worry kids, that can’t happen to you in current times. Recipes and ingredients have changed. Phew.
3) Licorice has not only influenced our historical figures; but it currently influences us in modern day. First of all, I can’t go to the movies with out a pack of licorice, can you? But, aside from that - it’s colors have inspired so many of our fashion choices from nail polish, to sandals, to handbags, to hats, to the dresses that we we wear.
That said, we’ve featured A.sweeT. round up of a few of our favorite licorice inspired things.
Clockwise, around:
5) Torn by Ronny Kobo - $278 (in-store only)
6)Melinda Maria - Galaxy Melted Bracelet - $135
7) Melissa - Voilatta Sandal - $90
8) Cleobella- Mexicana Clutch - $154
9) Haribo - Black Licorice Wheels - $15
10)Essie - Licorice Nail Polish - $8
